Catalina’s Cause: The Alphabet Mail-Order Brides Book 3 Page 10
“Be you, wife.” Oliver moved his hand from the center of her spine to the small of her back, using it to guide her in the direction their daughter was pulling her.
Catalina couldn’t help the huge smile on her face. She knew Oliver was happy for her. Knew he had faith in her and her abilities. Not everyone did. She was still fighting with the Indian Affairs Office to stop the boarding school from being built. Plus, there were the folks that didn’t want their children going to school with children of other ethnicities, but mostly the people of Shady Creek were kind and loving, like the Perkins family. Catalina stepped out onto the small steps. “Boys! Stop torturing Sophia.”
She laughed a little at Isaac’s face. She knew the reason the boy chased her was because he thought she was pretty. Catalina had seen it before, many times actually. It was really cute, and Sophia was an angel. Sweet, young girl with wonderful parents that ran the telegraph office that Minda loved to be around. Minda often talked of the girl’s high cheekbones and long black hair, and how it shone in the Arizona sun.
The boys stopped at the sound of her voice echoing through the afternoon, calling after them. She smiled and waved for all three of them to come inside. It wouldn’t be long before Sophia’s mother arrived to fetch her for the day, and the Harvey boys would return to the ranch with Oliver on the buckboard. Oliver met her then on the platform. “This is a wonderful place you’ve created, Catalina. I knew I was lucky the moment you stepped off the train, but I really had no idea. I love you.”
Catalina leaned against him, her hands running over her belly. “I love you too, Oliver Wilson. Thank you for writing that letter so many months ago.”
